Conformity
by Steve Arterburn
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. I
Corinthians 16:13
You could make the argument that we live in a troubled society. And if that's
the case, then adopting the values and priorities of our society would make
us-by virtue of definition-troubled as well, wouldn't it? Then why do we give
in to the pressure to conform to those values and priorities? We often refer
to it as peer pressure.
Few things in life come easier than giving in to the pressure to be like
everyone else. And even fewer things are more dangerous. Resistance requires
strength and self assurance.
Self assurance that you know God accepts you and loves you just as you are. You
don't need to wear the latest fashions, have the hair color and style of
the day, or drive the make and model of car you think will satisfy that
yearning to be in the in-crowd. There's truly only one thing that satisfies . .
a right relationship with God.
"I shall never know the security which consists in being like others. No, I
remain in unlikeness. There I remain with Thee--and I recognize the blessedness
of it." - Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855)
