Do you remember when the leaders of the Pharisees sent "officers" to arrest Jesus? They listened to Him and then returned that evening without Him. They asked the officers, "Why have ye not brought Him?" The men had to reply, having been awed by His words, "Never man spake like this man" (John 7:32, 45, 46). How could Jesus have spoken such words, especially since He had not been "properly educated in their schools? But Isaiah tells us the secret: In becoming one of us, Jesus took upon Himself our human nature. All He knew He had to learn from His Father just as we have to learn. Isaiah lets us in on a little secret.
Speaking in behalf of Jesus, he records this brilliant insight into the private life of Jesus: "The Lord God [His Father] hath given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth Mine ear to hear as the learned. ... And I was not rebellious, neither turned away back" (50:4, 5). Jesus says that He had no wisdom of His own: "My doctrine is not Mine, but His that sent Me" (John 7:16). "I speak to the world those things which I have heard of Him" (8:26), "I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father hath taught Me, I speak these things" (vs. 28). And when did the Father "teach" Him? In those early morning sessions in prayer and study. And so will the same heavenly Father teach you what to say to someone today whom you will meet who is "weary," someone who needs a morsel of the bread of life, who needs to drink of the water of life. --Robert J.
