REMEMBERING

Hallelujah!
Blessed is the person who fears the LORD
and is happy to obey his commands.
His descendants will grow strong on the earth.
The family of a decent person will be blessed.
Wealth and riches will be in his home.
His righteousness continues forever.
Light will shine in the dark for a decent person.
He is merciful, compassionate, and fair.
All goes well for the person who is generous and lends willingly.
He earns an honest living.
He will never fail.
A righteous person will always be remembered.
He is not afraid of bad news.
His heart remains secure, full of confidence in the LORD.
His heart is steady, and he is not afraid.
In the end he will look triumphantly at his enemies.
He gives freely to poor people.
His righteousness continues forever.
His head is raised in honor.
The wicked person sees this and becomes angry.
He angrily grits his teeth and disappears.
The hope that wicked people have will vanish.
Psalm 112

Most of us remember what happened on that horrible day eight years ago. We
remember where we were and what we were doing. However, what most of us took
from that horrific time was a deep sense of patriotism that our country had
lacked for too long. Sadly, it seems to be gradually slipping away again.

This reminds me of people and their self-esteem. So many of us have been taught
from childhood that we're only sinners saved by grace, that it somehow seems
"wrong" to say or think anything good about ourselves. I've been on several
retreats where part of the "getting to know each other routine" was to tell
something good about yourself. Ninety percent of the time, most people choked
out things like, "Well, I enjoy children," "I like music," or "I dress nicely."

How tragic. Because, you see, our God is not a God of sinners. He is a God for
sinners. But He is a God of sinners who are being made good! Be glad, but
not proud, when you find good in your heart and life.

What are some things you like about yourself? What things mark you off as a
good person? When you've made your list, go back and re-read this Psalm and
the blessings that God has in store for you.

He has made you good that He may bless you forever.

Father, help us to be the type of person this Psalm describes - at all times.
In Jesus' name,
Amen
