OK, we sorted it out. In short:

 * SQLA 1.50 is just a temporary solution before we implement 2.0
 * people are not supposed to use plain SQL (eg. \[$sql, @bind]) directly
 * if people are still using it, we'll invent some syntax sugar later
 * one person using it doesn't count towards 'people are still using it'
even if it's me :-)
