Hello, I have just found something called Twisted, which claims to include implementations of POP3 and SMTP clients and servers; and something called Quotient, which claims to use Twisted and implement IMAP, database mail storage, and a host of other features.
I will investigate further and report. It may be that the stuff we want is done already; or, more likely, that there is some bloatware hanging around that is unsuitable for a production server (because of the bloat), but that contains mush of the necessary Python code.
