Could you tell a little more about your production use case for dbmail?

This will highlight its existing strenghs, which should not be lost in
any rewrite (full or partial).

Fully agreed. As often happens, both extremes have dangers. There is a
"first version syndrome" (from which dbmail now suffers) AND there is a
"second system effect".
