This can be easily fixed by using the "Key-value file parser" in GLib (http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/2.0/glib/glib-Key-value-file-parser.html)

It's only available from GLib 2.6, which is a bit to new for my liking. I'll go find another one (some PD code, of some examples of how to do it in the right way.
