Don't upgrade automake. Downgrade! Imo, afaict, automake is seriously deranged.
Aaron's system builds fine using automake1.9, while for me it doesn't. And
compatibility between releases is apparently not for the autotool people.

I've been using automake1.4 (lowest common denominator) all along. And I don't
mind settling for some other version (1.9?), but I don't want to waste my time
on this stuff more than strictly required.
