I once had a process stuck in the D state, waiting on returns from a filesystem located on a block device that was dying but wasn't quite dead yet (picture Monty Python's crew carrying disk platters in a wheel barrow through the streets). You can't kill a process in D state, and if it's holding a port, well, tough luck. Aaron
