That sounds familiar. I've been thinking about exactly the same. All you have to do is implement a few interface classes (IAccount, IMailbox, IMessage) in protocols/imap4.py I think, wrap them in a perspective, build a tap, and run it. The imap code looks pretty complete to me, and twisted's underlying networking/daemon code is really superb.
