Aaaah... that is simple. It all comes back... the process of building
SASL2 with MySQL has quirks to drive a person nuts first time round!
rimap is nice workaround :o)

Agreed. But using the rimap mechanism in sasl is a very simple solution
though which provides a no-hassle smtp-auth solution. For smaller
installations that is most likely not a problem. Your situation is
indeed different.
Do you have any experience to compare imap vs mysql direct authentication
for sasl on DBMail? I like the idea but... maybe I should test that out a
bit and do a wiki. What do you put into /usr/local/lib/sasl2/smtpd.conf ?
