I've finally got this set up on similar machines between my old imap server (dovecot) and my new imap server (dbmail). I'm trying to see what the advantages/disadvantages are.

I apologize if some of this come off as being potentially flame bait. It's not intended to be, but I think the observation is valid.

From the vantage point of a typical user (thunderbird, view/move, read/write) this doesn't have much of an advantage. Benchmarking against a single user series of append commands, dbmail is slower for comparable machines. None of these machines are all that fast -- they are just what I've been using for my mail server.

What are the advantages of a database back-end on imap servers?
(It does appear to have a pretty big foot print on the machine)

Or do they come into play when the user base and email quantities exceed a certain order of magnitude?

Or is it more advantageous when considering the role of maintaner?
