This all sounds like it works just fine. The PostgreSQL support in
DBMail is great (I prefer PostgreSQL too). And yes, I would assume you
would use Mutt via IMAP.
Opening large folders is one of the main reasons I moved to DBMail also.

off to procmail for sorting into my various mail folders(maildir format).
I'm on several high-volume e-mail lists. The above setup works well except
for the case of large mail folders which Mutt can take a while to
open/thread. I'm a bit of a pack rat when it comes to mail. I tend to save
everything. I occasionally move older messages to archive folders to try to
improve performance. All total I have just under 5GB worth of mail at the
moment.
The only piece of the above puzzle I'm not willing to give up is Mutt. I
frequently read mail via SSH. How does one use Mutt to read mail stored in
a DBMail database? From what I've seen so far I'm guessing it's done via
DBMail's IMAP server. Does DBMail fit my needs? Can I achieve the same
functionality(with improved speed) as described above with DBMail? If so,
any pointers to docs relating to converting a setup similar to the one
described above to DBMail and importing my existing mail into DBMail would
be appreciated. I already have both PostgreSQL and MySQL(not to mention
Ingres, SQLite, and perhaps a few others I've forgotten about) installed on
my box. Yes, I'm a bit of a database junkie. I prefer PostgreSQL over
MySQL.
