Please look in dbmail.conf, and set TRACE_SYSLOG=5, then repeat your experiment and attach the section of the log file right before and right after the error. You should also look to see if the particular instance of dbmail-pop3d is crashing. A backtrace will help if there's a segfault. Try running dbmail-pop3d -n, which allows you to speak POP3 directly to the daemon over stdin/stdout. If it is actually crashing, you will be able to see that right away and then run your experiment again from gdb to get a backtrace.
