Hi all.

I've been using mysqldump ( and the binary logs ) to backup our
databases, including dbmail.

This works, but restores are *incredibly* slow. We've got almost 20GB of
email.

Have you looked at LVM snapshots? The idea is basically to have your entire Database on a LVM volume (it doesn't have to be a multidisk aggregation, just the LVM layer is what matters). Then you can use the mysql client to issue a flushing lock, create a snapshot block device, and release the lock. After this you have an atomic snapshot of the latest database, which you can simply tar away. Restore from a backup then is as simple as stopping mysql for 5 seconds, copying(renaming) the directory containing your data, tarting mysql.

If you find this promising and can not find enough information on the internet, let me know and I will put together a more detailed explanation.
