Sorry, maybe my English is bad.
I use (APOP with CRAM-MD5) for SMTP auth, but my SASL if get passwds from 
DBMAIL table, may read it only if they are "plaintext stored".
If I have in my dbmail_users *not* plaintext passwords, SASL can`t auth any 
user...
Maybe, it`s wrong for Your SASL version/installation?
Moreover, Outlook Express as mail client can use only plaintext auth or TLS. If 
mail traffic increase approximately in 3 times is undesirable, one can`t use 
TLS... That is why PLAINTEXT *and* CRAM_MD5 used...
     
In any case I apologize...
