Would it be enough to move a message via IMAP clients from one folder to 
another? That would make conversion fairly easy - simply move folders 
temporarily to a sub-folder and then back.
Of course this should not be the standard conversion routine - but if 
this does the trick, one could see the space gain that can be achieved.

Also Paul, it would be very nice to be able to have stats about how much 
space was saved via the new method - dbmail-util would be a nice place 
for this.
