There were just a handful of packages that still used gmime-2.2. The
rest had all switched to gmime-2.4 (gmime-2.6 didn't exist back then).

So the release managers decided to drop 2.2 completely, having notified
all downstream users well in advance. Of course dbmail-3 already used
gmime-2.4 but I just didn't have the time or motivation to push for
inclusion of dbmail-3.

As for Ubuntu: they simply followed debian.
