Nice to see your interest in DBpedia!
Speaking from the fact extraction side, here are a few pointers.

1. Google Summer of Code 2015 project: 
https://github.com/dbpedia/fact-extractor
2. This year, Alexandru (in CC) is proposing an idea that looks to me 
like a nice follow-up to the above project: 
http://wiki.dbpedia.org/ideas/idea/237/a-hybrid-classifierrule-based-event-extractor-for-dbpedia/

In general, it would be nice to have the fact extractor scale up to more 
languages and more domains: it is currently implemented for Italian and 
the soccer domain.
