I find the learning curve steep too.

If you look, for example, on 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlin_Model_1894 you see the 'Infobox 
Weapon' on the top. The extracted data can be see on 
http://dbpedia.org/page/Marlin_Model_1894 (In my Firefox browser it falls 
back to html)

The use of the infobox across Wikipedia is seen at 
http://dbpedia.org/ontology/Weapon but I don't see an equivalent of 'Gun', 
so for example tank-like guns are included in 'Weapon'.
