We could put a collection of owl:equivalentProperty assertions in a 
Named Graph and then use said graph for inference rules. It would mean 
that for backward compatibility (re. property names) you simply invoke a 
Virtuoso Inference Rule via the inference rules sparql pragma.

Note: this is about using an extension to solve a problem. As per usual 
re. Virtuoso, its simply an option :-)
