I can login with my wiki account and password but in order to sync the ontology
with MediaWiki I am required to enter a different password. I'll give up on the
graphical tool for the time being...

Did you try your wiki password? I think the mapping tool uses the same password
from mappings.dbpedia.org<http://mappings.dbpedia.org>, which might also
explain what "sync" means there?
