Basically, DBpedia uses Wikipedia, which is the largest online
encyclopedia, as the source of data.
Wikipedia covers almost all knowledge disciplines, which needs a complex
ontology to cover all or at least most of these disciplines.
Since there is no single ontology covering all of these knowledge
fields, we have to build our own ontology.
However, DBpedia still uses some of the available vocabularies which
fit, e.g. The Friend of a Friend (FOAF), and The Dublin Core.
