Hi all,

I would like to post the first section of the DBpedia newsletter here for discussion. We normally spread a small part of the newsletter through other channels, but if you want to read about all activities, you need to sign up (http://eepurl.com/crrrkz , published 4-times a year, next one will be released in the coming days) . After we spend some time talking about data quality in the DBpedia dev telco, we will focus this telco about the opportunities the New DBpedia has to offer.

Access details will be available here: http://tinyurl.com/DBpediaDevMinutes before the telco.

Any input or replies to this email beforehand are of course welcome.

   *The New DBpedia*

*

We went deep into the engine room of the extraction workflow and analysed it. Markus our release manager has consistently worked on improving the extraction over the last two years, i.e. automating the manual steps and also speeding up the time. He did the calculations and we think we have the manpower to implement the following features:

 *

bi-weekly updates of the 10 biggest languages + Wikidata + Commons

 *

a fusion of these 12 datasets including new identifiers and better
   data quality

Note that this is a new feature and we will do this in addition to the full releases every six months.

     Opportunities for the DBpedia Community

In implementing these new features, we see many opportunities for the community. The biggest opportunity here is that your changes and fixes will be visible in DBpedia in a timely manner. This includes your changes to the ontology, changes to the mappings, contribution to the links <https://github.com/dbpedia/links>.

We are also discussing complete new ways to contribute to DBpedia. The New DBpedia will include ways for you to upload your own datasets or your own fixes to datasets. Everyone can have a user space, where he can publish additions, rules and data he thinks can improve DBpedia.

     New DBpedia, new deal

We are currently testing the technology for these contributions, once this is done, we have a better idea about what we can do. It became clear, however, that we need to establish a new deal. So now is the time for everybody to start discussing and shaping the direction of DBpedia. Here are some ideas and use cases:

 *

your project has implemented an awesome pipeline based on DBpedia
and other sources. The project is ending and the consortium is
discussing how to sustain it. Why not push the maintenance of the
   pipeline/APIs/other project results to DBpedia?

 *

DBpedia is not well developed for a domain you are an expert in. Why
not fix/extend DBpedia for medicine/tourism/finance/biology and push
it. We are thinking about ways that users who improve DBpedia can
   earn money with their extensions.

 *

Your company requires updates for certain parts of DBpedia in a more
quality-controlled, sustainable way. We might add subscriptions and
also find the right people from the community that can help to
   improve data for a fee.

 *

Your data is lying around and you would like people to use it more
and see what people do with it. Why not load it in the main endpoint
and expose it to other users or just to yourself for querying.

The DBpedia Association will be a facilitator in this new deal by providing a stable and reliable infrastructure (for a price) and also redistributing its funds to its chapters and also to people that are willing to improve DBpedia.

Please contact us at dbpe...@infai.org <mailto:dbpe...@infai.org>if you wish to be among the first collaborators in this new deal. *
