Focusing on cost modelling for digital preservation this ENSURE project aims to address the increasing difficulty experienced with ensuring long-term usability of commercially relevant data produced or controlled by organisations. It will draw on motivation from use cases in health care, finance and clinical trials to deliver state-of-the-art digital preservation. The PhD project aims to develop a cost model which considers the whole life cycle of digital preservation. The successful applicant will research how to adapt existing cost modelling methods and techniques to the entire life cycle of digital preservation and aim to identify the cost drivers, work and cost breakdown structures associated with digital data reservation to develop the cost models. They will develop a framework to incorporate risk and uncertainty factors into cost estimation and define an uncertainty identification and prioritisation process to enhance efficiency in capturing uncertainty of long term data preservation. Start date: ASAP Entry requirements Applicants should have a First or Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) or MSc in a relevant discipline such as software engineering, information technology, or other relevant engineering disciplines. In addition, some experience in cost engineering and data preservation would be beneficial. The researcher will require technical report writing, organisation, analytical, communication (oral and written), technical paper and article writing, and client handling skills. Funding * Supported by EU-FP7 grant, this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only. Non UK/EU students will have to pay the remainder of their tuition fees (£11,050) before commencing their studies. Applicants are also eligible for a bursary of up to £15,000 p.a. for up to three years dependent upon qualifications and experience.
