Hey Ya'll,
So, here is the story. A friend of mine works in a head shop in
the middle of nowhere in Rhode Island - Charlestown, RI to be exact. A
couple of weeks ago he called me to tell me that his boss had about 10 reel
to reels (8 hrs. of each) of Grateful Dead recordings taped at the Fillmore
East from 1967-1970. Being well read on my compendiums and deadbases, I
quickly thought to myself, "There sure are a bunch of Fillmore East dates
that have never been circulated, especially during 67 and 68." So I began
spouting questions at my buddy. Here is what I got:
Supposedly, this guy who owns the reels was given them in a shroud
of secrecy. Some of his buddies (3 or 4) had worked at the Fillmore East
and recorded the shows. They all swore never to give them to anyone. One
of these people who worked at the Fillmore lived with the guy who now owns
the reel to reels. Supposedly, this individual got into some shit with the
law or something and bailed, leaving behind these reels. Is it
un-circulated material? As of now, I do not know!
Now, I am certainly aware of many stories surrounding the 2/13 and
2/14/70 tapes in which a couple of brothers, who were ushers at the
Fillmore, taped those shows. But, I have a solid inclination that these
are completely different shows, with entirely different lineage. In the
next week or two I will be going to this persons house to do some
investigation.
Here is where you guys come in. If these are un-circulated shows
they MUST be transferred to DAT. And unfortunately, I do not think my
trusty D-8 is right for the job. So, if they are what I think they are, I
am requesting the assistance (and equipment) of a/some kind soul(s) on this
list. Preferably someone who has done Reel to Reel transfers in the past.
If this is you, and you think you would be interested in helping, please
e-mail me.
I will keep updated the list and anyone who contacts me on this
somewhat intriguing story. Don't get your hopes up, this could all be
highly circulated material. Nonetheless, I am feeling reel-ly good about
the possibility of finding a long-lost hidden gem in there.
Peace,
Keith in Rhode Island
