In fact the dating of this piece of tape is purely by ear based on the
performance. But that's not so hard. The performance is obviously later
than the Carousel performances we have from late March '68, and is obviously
earlier than the August '68 stuff from LA & SF and probably earlier than the
6/14/68 Fillmore East conflagration and sounds kinda like the San Jose
5/18/68 tapes, as far as overall groove goes -- whence "May '68". I guess
the fact of the reels themselves & maybe other labeling factors or placement
in the vault or whatever also suggests "1968", but that's obvious from the
performance. And the rough period is obvious from the performance too
because the band was evolving so rapidly during that period.
