I saw the flash paper as well.  The "gas jets"  were different.  They were 
fairly tall flames (at least 3 feet) shooting more or less straight 
up.  That they were gas jets is a bit speculative: that's what they looked 
liked and it looked like someone was lighting something but I don't know 
for sure.  I seem to recall seeing them at Port Chester during some of the 
1970 shows but I can't say that for certain.
