mis-remembered) versions of this, given the similarities.

Though it's not quite the same thing, Hunter has borrowed bits and
pieces of tons from old traditional songs and incorporated them into his
writings. There are countless examples, but the one that stand out to me
in my sleepy haze this morning is Terrapin. I know there are more than 2
old songs referenced in Terrapin, but for now I remember the Bold
Lieutenant (with lines such as "Down in Carlisle lived a lady," and "
threw her fan in the lion's den, saying 'which of you to gain a lady,
will return to me my fan'?") and the many variations of the song Lady of
Carlisle, Lady from Carlisle, etc. I am endlessly fascinated with how
Hunter incorporated themes and lyrics from old timey songs into his own
songs. No wonder they have that haunted, old salt feel to them!
