This is the current entry I have for the two different 8/22/68 shows. One is in mono and one is stereo. Easy way to tell them apart: they actually sing AWBYGN on the stereo one and just play the theme as a jam on the mono one. Which is the "real" 8/22/68? Who knows....

I still need to add the timings in for the Alligator sequence on the mono 8/22/68 in the proper format.

COMMENTS After "one man gathers what another man spills" in Saint Stephen, Bobby doesn't say anything - there is a pause and it sounds like someone is blowing into a microphone, followed by "a-hem". Bill Graham introduction before Dark Star: "Clean cut, but morally corrupt... the Grateful Dead." Right as Dark Star is ending: Phil: "turn off the strobe light for a while." Jerry: "It makes clicks on the stage." Phil: "...and on our tape. please." Jerry: "thank you." Before the first Cryptical "...four". There is a splice at 3:29 in The Other One, and it picks up right after the final verse, during the "...coming around" chorus.

This recording is all in mono and the source is supposedly MSR>C>D>CDR. There is another recording in circulation from a different concert, very close in time frame to this one, which is also dated as 8/22/68. See below.

The DAT tapes of 8/21 and 8/22 came into circulation together as a set and were traded far and wide about the time Two From The Vault was released. Since there are two separate recordings that circulate as 8/22/68, we may not have heard the end of this one.

COMMENTS Sung during Alligator: "Burn down the Fillmore... ...leave the heat alone", followed shortly by "I told my dog he's got to bring her someday" or something close to that. Unlike 8/21 and 8/23, Feedback doesn't come to a complete finish, but goes into Bid You Goodnight.

This recording is all in stereo. There is another recording in circulation from a different concert, very close in time frame to this one, which is also dated as 8/22/68. See above.

One source says this recording originates from 10 inch 8-track master reels at 15ips, and it circulates on DAT labeled as Multi-track MSR>D and on CDR as Multi-track MSR>D>CDR. However, David Gans received this Alligator sequence from Dick, labeled as 8/22/68 on a 1/4-track reel he made from Bear's cassettes. Copies of David's reel now circulate on CDR correctly labeled as MSC>1R>SS>CDR. Perhaps more of this show exists in the vault on reels or cassettes?

Some copies of this recording are in circulation labeled as 8/22/68 and are a compilation that contains the Alligator sequence listed above preceded by the following, which is edited and reordered from 8/24/68: //St. Stephen > The Eleven > Death Don't % Dark Star// % Cryptical > Drums > The Other One// > Cryptical > New Potato// %. No wonder the end of Dark Star and the beginning of St. Stephen are clipped. Strangely enough, this replicates the song order of the other (mono) 8/22/68 tape! It's possible that those 8/24/68 songs may not be from TFTV discs.

The DAT tapes of 8/21 and 8/22 came into circulation together as a set and were traded far and wide about the time Two From The Vault was released. Since there are two separate recordings that circulate as 8/22/68, we may not have heard the end of this one.
