Matthew, There were 4 books released in late 90's - early '00's called the Deadhead's Taping Compendium, Volume 1, 2, 3 and then an Addendum. They had reviews of every Dead show available on bootleg or official means at the time. Besides being a good read, at the back of the first 3 volumes, which each covered a time period in the band history, they had the best versions of songs from that time period. In the back of the Addendum, which included reviews of shows that had become available after the release of the other volumes, they had the best versions of the songs ever. While the lists were the opinion of the authors, they jive with what I see from other lists and from my own listening. I still refer to the lists, especially when I'm trying to turn someone on to the Dead and I know they like certain songs so I can find a show or shows with the best version of those songs and then hope they turn on to the rest. Here's the link on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url! =search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Deadhead%27s+Taping+Compendium . They may be out of print but it looks like you can get some of them used through Amazon or maybe find them in a local used book store.
