I asked the first of these gentlemen and he said that for the moment there is no paper that describes the method in detail -- Martin and I implemented this after talking to the two during our daily coffee meeting. For the moment, the best reference is a paper on a related method where instead of evaluating the residual, one looks at an entropy production term. This can be found in the following paper: J.-.L.
