as far as I know this error is governed by the usual polynomial
interpolation error like the finite element aprroximation itself. So you
will get an error estimate depending on the maximal cell diameter of the
grid you interpolate on for every time step.

as well. Would you want to propose a patch that clarifies things now that
you've understood them?
