What version of deal.II are you using? What system are you running deal.II
on? How did you configure deal.II? What compilers are you using? What
happens with other tutorials that use the build_patches routine?
I can't tell what is happening here unless you provide some details.
Tutorials should work fine unless you're doing something weird or stupid.
