thanks a lot for this answer.

The partitioning happens in such a way that every processor has exactly the
same number of cells, in each refinement cycle. So there is no geometric
partitioning step involved where you can talk about "regions", and
consequently no knobs to play with.

I did not realize that partitioning happens in every refinement cycle and so there is no need for a geometric adaption at the beginning.
