Ok. But the --diable-shared option should not affect compilation; rather
it should give runtime hangs. I've put that on my list of things to figure
out. Thaks for sharing your experience with us.

Incidently, if you are using static libraries, the libpetsc.so library
should not be looked for. This probably means I made an error with the
configure.in. Can you please send me (off list) your config.log from
deal.II and the config.log from PETSc (the ones that work). That would
greatly help me figure out what went wrong and I can try to fix it.
