I am now aware of anything that would cause this, but it certainly sounds like
a bug. A small testcase would definitely be useful!
In the past, I have debugged problems such as this by interpolating a known
and simple function onto the mesh, and then applying the constraints via
ConstraintMatrix::distribute() to the vector with the interpolant. If the
constraints are wrong, you will see this if you just output this as a field
(with sufficiently high n_subdivisions passed to DataOut::build_patches()).
