here is a fun fact: deal.II (or, better: a deal.II-based program) is now part of the SPEC CPU 2017 suite of benchmarks with which all computer makers measure the speed of their machines:

Specifically, it's the 510.parest_r benchmark that solves an inverse problem.

I like the fact that whenever computer makers build computers, they have to optimize it for our codes as well ;-) Of course, they have already been doing that for a long time:
