We have an ongoing research project with Caltech where we are trying to explore ways of approximating the subspace spanned by k lowest eigen values of a given positive definite matrix(FEM discretized matrix) in a sparse format using the incomplete Cholesky factor with reduced computational complexity. So I need access to the incomplete Cholesky factor.

Interesting.

The "cheap and dirty" way to get what you want is to modify the declaration of the class so that the derivation of SparseILU from SparseMatrix is 'public', not 'private' or 'protected'. This way, you can access all of the usual member functions of the sparse matrix. We don't want to do that for the actual sources we distribute for the reasons stated previously, but there is nothing inherently wrong with doing this yourself in your local copy.
