Anti-government extremist executed in Alabama

Anti-government extremist George Sibley Jr. was executed Thursday for the
1993 shooting death of an Opelika police officer.

Officials at Holman Prison near Atmore conducted the execution after the
U.S. Supreme Court denied Sibley's request for a delay and Gov. Bob Riley
turned down Sibley's request for a 6-month postponement.

"There is no new evidence that would justify such a delay," the governor
said.

Sibley, 62, was convicted of capital murder for the shooting death of
Opelika police officer Roger Motley. Sibley's common-law wife, Lynda Lyon
Block, was executed in 2002 for her role in Motley's death.

Sibley becomes the 3rd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in
Alabama and the 33rd overall since the state resumed capital punishment in
1983.

Sibley becomes the 33rd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in
the USA and the 977th overall since America resumed executions on January
17, 1977.
