MALAYSIA/PERU:

11 Peruvians trafficking cocaine to Malaysia to receive death penalty


After a 20-year-old Peruvian man was caught at a Malaysian airport with
1.3 kilograms of cocaine in his stomach last week, he led Kuala Lumpur
police to 10 other Peruvians trafficking drugs into the Asian city.

It was reported that the man was immediately taken to a hospital and
x-rayed.

He released 106 capsules stuffed with cocaine, valued at $62,000, after he
was given a laxative.

The young man's arrest led to the capture of the group's main contact and
then to the arrest of another 9 Peruvians at an inn in Kuala Lumpur.

Although the names and ages of the Peruvian detainees have not been
released, it is known that they are between the ages of 25 and 44.

Malaysian police believe the group belongs to an international drug ring
that was using their country to ship drugs to countries where narcotics
are used more, for example, Thailand.

According to Patricia Castro Obando, a correspondent for El Comercio in
Malaysia, these Peruvians and another 5, which are also incarcerated for
the same crime, will receive the death penalty.

Only those that are caught with less than 15 grams of cocaine are not
sentenced to death, said El Comercio.

Malaysian police said that other foreigners in the same situation had
already been put to death, reported Castro.

It was reported that Peruvian authorities would be notified of each
person's name and their status within the following days.
