Hi again, sorry to fill up any
inboxes!
Just one more email as we have now arranged a
special event for next Sunday (8/10/06) We will be
holding a mini-debate tournament in the afternoon with a (very!) grand prize of
€30 for the best speaker!
The focus will very much be on new members - so
regulars from last year will not be entered unless they partner a new speaker to
make up numbers. However if you only came infrequently last year you are very
welcome.
The idea is this - we hope to have at least 8
teams (2 people per team) and then do 3 rounds of debating, in the style of a
real tournament, although a lot more relaxed of course. If this sounds
intimidating, it really isn't - and when we held this last year nearly
everyone found that the competitive edge made debating a lot more fun, and
that taking part with just other new people made speaking really easy. Its also
the best way to advance your public speaking skills. And after the tournament
we'll all go to somewhere nice for food and the prize giving part.
And to make things friendlier still - we're going
to give you the motion of the first debate - "This House
Believes That Civil Rights Need to be Sacrificed in the Name of
Security" . The other 2 motions will be revealed only on the day -
but they will about very familiar topics.
So if you are interested, or would like to know
more, please email me. It really will be a lot of fun! Details below. Feel free
to register in pairs if you already know someone you would like to debate
with.
