I think there is a sizable amount of people who would take the opportunity
to travel by train within continental Europe instead of flying to South
America if they were to meet, a couple dozen of their Debian friends. Those
of us travelling to Argentina would not see them.

Travelling to Lisboa by train from central Europe is quite an adventure :)

I know you mean well; I know you for many years, and I know you have
sweated to come up with an offering to receive the Debian people in
Portugal. And I really want to go there! But please try to understand how
this feels for the receiving end.

I totally see your point (now -- and thanks to you and terceiro and others for pointing it out!); still, I wonder if it's better if I follow DebConf26 alone at home at my desk or together with others e.g. in Lisboa.

Dear Gregor, I don't want to make you or José feel bad about getting
excited about this idea. I understand this point as well. But, in any case
— if need be, please arrange it organically, and without an official
label. Have a couple of non-far-travelling DDs get together, share some
pictures, enjoy some days together linking with the main conference. But,
please (and I ask it as a _person_ only, it's not an official DebConf
Committee member word!) don't advertise it as a mini-DebConf-concurrently.
