just a thought, since %a5 is used for special purpose by PIC code is it possible the libraries were compiled with inconsistent PIC settings? I thought that this would generally not cause crashes but maybe it does under special circumstances? I have myself very little idea what PIC/nonPIC code mixing does and what the rules are.
