Are you using the -curses option? If so, yes, curses can't catch alt-f4 to give it to XP before gnome takes it as closing gnome-terminal. For that you need to _not_ use the -curses option, kvm will then open a separate window, and there the ctrl-alt shortcut will make kvm catch all kinds of shortcuts (except ctrl-alt).
