Hello
Have you made sure that the gnome-menu extention is activated?
check with gnome-tweak tool.
I could be wrong, but if the menu extention is not active or installed,
alt +f1 just brings the overview window which is not quite good to use.
when orca says "window" try searching on it and see if it brings anything.
for example search "settings"
If it does, then alt+f1 is bringing up the activities panel or something.

It's so out of date that bug fixes are extremely unlikely. If you were running
GNOME 3.12 from Sid you would be in a much better position, and bug reports
would have a much greater chance of being addressed upstream.
Ok, dist-upgraded the machine to Sid now, ran “orca -t” from tty to make sure
Orca was correctly set up, and still, when pressing Alt+F1 within gnome, orca
just says “window”.
Anything else I need to do?
