Ok, no desktop and thus no pulseaudio in the way. > [?2004hroot@debian642:~# amixer -c 0 scontents > [?2004l > Simple mixer control 'Master',0 > Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined > Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right > Limits: Playback 0 - 63 > Mono: > Front Left: Playback 49 [78%] [-21.00dB] [on] > Front Right: Playback 49 [78%] [-21.00dB] [on] > Simple mixer control 'PCM',0 > Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined > Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right > Limits: Playback 0 - 63 > Mono: > Front Left: Playback 23 [37%] [0.00dB] [on] > Front Right: Playback 23 [37%] [0.00dB] [on] This does not seem muted. Does .wav playing with aplay etc. produce sound? 37% is a bit low but that should still be audible. I'm surprised by the value, though, alsa-utils should have set it to 80%. Did you try to use the speakup shortcuts to raise the volume? You can also try to use amixer -c 0 set PCM 90% to directly set it to 90% Samuel
