I couldn't get my hands on a binary for 5.17.x. I booted the current bullseye
kernel, 5.10.149-2. I still had the problem, although in a different way. This
time the speech stopped before the buffer overwriting. As soon as I restarted
speech the buffer overwriting was happening. I'm guessing they are still very
much related but once it happens you can get an immediate stopping of speech or
you can get the buffer overwriting first.

I'll keep poking away at this. If you have any other ideas, toss them my way.
I'll try them all.

I'm booted on to 6.0.2 again.
