I have one Trixie test system running under 'quickemu'. It is only
occasionally choppy. It seems to be usable, but I only use it for testing.
It is fairly easy to use, but I can't say if it would work better for
you or not.
The Debian package is 'quickemu'.

Well I haven't so far.
I may just reinstall the VM with another desktop.
Turns out I had been to the URL you sent already but I did more reading
there.
I tried a lot of things like mask and unmask and starting and stopping
different parts of pipewire, including wireplumber.
Nothing has worked.
I get the normal grub beep, which is coming through the speaker, and choppy
speech at the log in window, I use the same username as the password, in
instances like this when I don't know which field I'm in, and after I enter
the login stuff, it goes silent.
Even speaker-test now no longer works over SSH.
I removed and purged mate-desktop-environment and installed LXDE, but the
audio problem is the same.
