system vs a full screen type interface.
Try "M-X term" within Emacs. It solves your problem above, and when I
last used it (not recently, admittedly), it had full Emacspeak
customization. In fact, if I remember rightly, there may be a newer
terminal interface within Emacs as well - it would be worth checking.
