Yes,
I am working with someone who has one of the BTSpeak devices and they need
something that works in a single shell vs something that will take control
over the entire system.
Currently I have them using Emacspeak, but they are having issues with
applications that accept single character input as Emacs is a line oriented
system vs a full screen type interface.
Try "M-X term" within Emacs. It solves your problem above, and when I
last used it (not recently, admittedly), it had full Emacspeak
customization. In fact, if I remember rightly, there may be a newer
terminal interface within Emacs as well - it would be worth checking.
